International Cooperation

Asian Development Bank

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) fielded a Fact-Finding Mission in April 2006 for exploring areas of regional energy cooperation initiatives is South Asia. The Mission held discussions with the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu and SEC in Islamabad.

The ADB finally agreed to provide Technical Assistance of US$ one million to SAARC for Energy Sector Dialogue and SAARC Energy Center Capacity Development Project. The Technical Assistance comprises the following main components:

  • undertaking the SAARC Regional Energy Trade Study (SRETS), which will look into the potential for/impact of energy trade among SAARC Member States;
  • Capacity building of SAARC Energy Centre.

The overall expected outcome of the TA is the identification of the most appropriate energy development and trading opportunities to meet growing energy demand in SAARC countries. The TA will also improve the viability of such development in the energy sector projects in the region by increasing awareness about appropriate incentives, technologies and enabling environment
